Contents page idea

i have decided to base my contents page around this NME page as the layout is busy but simple and uses more than just one main image. in order for this layout to work, i need to keep the image proportions right otherwise everything will be slightly out, like in my draft, and it will look over crowded, messy and un organised.

Final Magazine Cover Draft

"ok. Looks good. Try reducing the size of Muse etc and squeeze on more bands on the left side. Can flux fit the width of page?"

Final Magazine Front Cover Draft

ignoring the quality of the picture, which is still really annoying, this is my first draft of my magazine front cover.

First Draft Cover so far..

this is my draft cover, i'm not too sure what writing to add, what font to use, or whether to add any at all. What annoys me is that her eyes and hair are out of focus, so i need to bare that in mind for my final photo. George couldn't make it for the photo shoot, so i have used daisy. I think she fits the genre well with her hair, make up and fashion sense, and is photogenic. I have dressed her in a 'Drop Dead' T-shirt, a clothing line made by the lead singer of Bring Me The Horizon, who my target audience would recognize.

Front Cover Draft

no i know this is rubbish, but this is roughly the layout i want to use with George Sherratt (profile to come) as the main picture.

Fonts Moodboard

i have decided to call my magazine B-side as it relates to the songs which are not on the main album, or on the other side of the record and are less well known or less of a success. This reflects the bands my magazine will include as they are not 'mainstream' and are less known to a large majority of people, disregarding my target audience, who will have most likely heard of them.
this does not mean that they will not be known in the future, as they are just starting, but at this present time they are in the 'background'.
I quite like the 'type writer' style of font as it is quite old fashioned, but in fashion, or you could say 'vintage'.

Front Cover Layout Mood Board

I have noticed that the common rock music magazine cover involves either the band (main members) or the lead singer or front man. The colours used consist of mainly white, black and red, or blue and white, with the mast head behind the picture and the band name across the picture.
For my magazine i may use a red title, and the lead singer of my band on the front with the rest of the band included on the double page spread and contents page (which will also include pictures of the bands included throughout the magazine)

Audience Profile- Daisy Howarth

Name: Amber Kelsey
Age: 16
Occupation: AS student- full time
Amber is a big music fan. she knows every lyrics to almost every song, and likes listening to a variety of bands and artists and genres from rap to rock. She enjoys listening to bands such as Kasabian, Don Broco, You Me At Six, Mayday Parade, and Young Guns with the odd rap song thrown in every now and then by artists such as Jay- Z and Kanye West.
Amber likes to go to festivals such as Glastonbury, Download and Reading and Leeds and spends most of her money on clothes, gigs and bus/train fare. the clothes she wears are mainly topshop, newlook, band merchandise, Doc Martens, Vans, smaller less popular shops, and often buys her clothes online. She always keeps her eye out for a bargain or a sale and would preferably spend as little as possible. she also has her nose pierced and drinks tea and energy drinks such as Monster and Red Bull.
She would prefer to go to a house party, rather than a club as it's much more relaxed and casual and when at gigs prefers to be at the front or in a mosh pit rather than in the side lines. Amber also waits after the gig to meet the band, have a picture and a chat about their up and coming music, and maybe tweet them in hope for a reply, as being involved and interacting with the band is an important part of the music and experience, but her opinion is mainly based on the quality and taste and style of music they play. She will also usually buy the singles or albums of the support acts in order to help the band grow and find someone new to listen to.
Amber spends most of her spare time looking after and riding her horse. She uses social networking sights including Twitter and -less so- facebook. She enjoys photography and diary's her day through twitter and instagram through pictures.
The types of magazine she buys as Kerrang! Rock, NME and sometimes The Rolling Stone as she enjoys both old and new 'rock' music such as Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, The Who, The Smiths, Led Zeppelin and The Kinks therefore Amber is my perfect target market as i hope to include both old and new music, selecting one classic band so have a section on every two weeks, while the rest of the magazine will include new rock music, a gig guide, new up and coming bands and exclusive competitions and interviews.

Colours: text on back ground

nicked this from Sir- thought it might come in handy...

Black on white is still the easiest way to present type and to read it and you change that colour at your peril. Using coloured paper, coloured type or a heavy type patch often reduces legibility. In tests carried out by Karl Borgrgrafe (cited in Favre and November 1979) to see which colours worked best together, the following taxonomy of colour mixes was discovered, starting with the most legible, and working through to the least legible.

 on yellow
Yellow on black
Green on white
Red on white
Black on white
White on blue
Blue on yellow
Blue on white
White on black
Green on yellow
Black on orange

Orange on black

Yellow on green
Blue on red
Yellow on red
White on red
Red on black
White on orange
Black on green
Orange on white
Orange on blue
Yellow on orange
Red on orange

As you can see, black and white comes pretty near the top although the list suggests that a yellow panel behind the black type would improve legibility (which is why important warning signs of danger are usually printed black on yellow.)

Contents Page

I am going to base my contents page on this Q layout, as I like the big picture on the right, and small ones on the left, i may add one more picture, but this layout is more simple and less crowded.
